TPV and TPE Technology Gains Ground in Global Sealing Industry

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) has placed thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) and thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) under renewed professional focus, reflecting growing industry recognition of these advanced polymer families as serious alternatives to conventional thermoset rubbers in sealing and jointing applications.

What Sets TPEs and TPVs Apart

TPEs are a broad class of materials that combine the flexible, rubber-like performance of elastomers with the processing advantages of thermoplastics — meaning they can be melted, reshaped and recycled without the irreversible chemical crosslinking that defines traditional vulcanised rubber. TPVs represent a more specialised subset, produced through dynamic vulcanisation, in which a thermoset rubber phase is finely dispersed within a thermoplastic matrix. This structure gives TPVs enhanced compression-set resistance, thermal stability and durability under repeated mechanical stress — properties that are directly relevant to sealing systems exposed to long-term cyclic loading.

For building and infrastructure applications, these characteristics translate into meaningful performance benefits. Seals and gaskets made from TPVs can maintain effective contact pressure over extended service lives, resist UV degradation and weathering, and tolerate a wider temperature range compared with many conventional elastomers. At the same time, their thermoplastic nature simplifies extrusion processing and enables tighter dimensional tolerances in profiled sections — a practical advantage when seals must fit precisely within aluminium or concrete joint housings.

The materials also align with evolving sustainability expectations in the construction sector. Because TPEs and TPVs are thermoplastic, post-production scrap can be reintroduced into the manufacturing process, reducing material waste relative to cured rubber compounds. End-of-life recyclability is increasingly considered during specification on projects seeking green building ratings.

IOM3's attention to this segment signals that TPE and TPV technology is maturing beyond niche automotive and industrial uses, with broader professional communities — including civil and structural engineers — beginning to engage more deeply with the materials science involved.
